Hilary Joyce

I have always enjoyed making things but never felt fully creatively engaged until I did an embroidery course on Zoom during lockdown in 2020.  We were encouraged to use stitch in a very expressive way and this was a revelation to me.  I then applied to the Textile Foundation Course at Morley College which I finished in 2024.  I loved this course and relished the opportunity to try lots of different techniques and processes.  I ended the year by making three magpies out of wire and wadding and “found objects”!

I am now exploring where I go next in my textile art practice, taking some time to absorb and reflect on new ideas and ways of working. At the moment, I am concentrating on developing a daily sketchbook habit.  I’m doing lots of drawings and paintings of the things that I see every day – in particular birds and trees. I’m also thinking of doing more printing and developing some projects from the huge pile of old family photographs that is sitting in my sewing room.
