Diana McKinnon
My textile and embroidery work is mainly reliant on my photographs. I use different fabrics and silk paper to layer and then stitch to get depth and light so that the viewer feels they can walk into the scene.
During Lockdown I had time to experiment with many techniques. I still like to manipulate and push the boundaries of materials. One I continue to use is the recycling of vintage fabrics. Wrapping in rusty nails and dying in tea gives an assortment of results. Cutting small pieces of detail and building up an image that can then be free machined to add definition and texture.
From primary teaching, studying City & Guilds in Creative Embroidery, becoming a textile artist, my journey has been exciting and challenging.
I’m now a member of Skylark Galleries, Gabriel’s Wharf, South Bank. I show in the gallery and exhibit with them in London.
I became a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen about 10 years ago and have exhibited in their exhibitions in London and Chichester. At present I’m part of a new project - Crossing Lines. It has been set up by the society to link two artists with different skills. My artist is a wood turner and I’m presently developing ‘bark’ inspired 3D forms.
